Coast Guard to conduct tactical coxswain training on Thames River NEW LONDON, Conn.,--Coast Guard Station New London will be conducting Tactical Coxswain Training on the Thames River in New London, Conn., October 21st and 22nd. Rescue boat crew members from Coast Guard Stations Montauk, Tactical maneuvering instructors from Coast Guard Sector Long Island as well as Coast Guard Stations New London and New Haven are conducting the training in direct support of the submarine and ferry escort missions routinely conducted in the Long Island Sound area. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound has issued a Broadcast Notice to Mariners alerting mariners in the area and advising them to keep clear of the exercise as it is going on. “Our units conduct an average of 350 submarine and ferry escorts each year,” said Lt. Thomas Stokes, commanding officer of Coast Guard Station New London. “We are giving the crews on the water experience that will allow them to test our tactics and procedures to improve their ability to protect the valuable resources in and around Long Island Sound."
