Coast Guard establishes safety zone around beached whale at Rockaway Beach *UPDATE*

NEW YORK - The Coast Guard suspended its search for a 20-foot humpback whale that was reportedly attempting to beach itself at Rockaway Beach, N.Y. around 10 p.m.

Coast Guard Station New York initially responded with a 25-foot rescue boat crew to establish a safety zone around the animal, but the whale could not be located.

A team from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation will conduct a search in the morning to determine what happened to the whale.

A large crowd had gathered on the beach near the whale earlier in the evening, but dispersed as darkness fell.

The Coast Guard advises the public to keep a safe distance from injured or stranded marine life as the animals can be unpredictable and dangerous.
