MULTIPLE AGENCIES TO HOST SUBSTANCE ABUSE AWARENESS DEMONSTRATION ***Editors note: Any interested media should contact Petty Officer 3rd Class Barbara Patton at 212-668-7114. NEW YORK - Coast Guard Detachment Sandy Hook will partner with other first responder agencies to assist in the annual Rude Awakenings anti-drug and alcohol event at the Marine Science Academy of Technology in Sandy Hook, N.J., Wednesday, April 30 from 8:45 a.m to 2:00 p.m. The event will include demonstrations of high-impact collisions, a controlled simulation of a high-speed vehicle skid and an impaired vision obstacle course in which participants use special goggles to simulate being intoxicated. Guest speakers will also be on hand to discuss the negative consquences of drinking and driving and drug abuse. "The program started as a result of the high number of alcohol and drug related incidents which were occuring as a result of prom night," said U.S. Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer Frederick Venchenko, the supervisor for Coast Guard Detachment Sandy Hook. "We want them to understand the impact it has on others - accident victims, the people riding in the car with them, etc." Any interested media should contact Petty Officer 3rd Class Barbara Patton at 212-668-7114.
