CONTAINER SHIP RUNS AGROUND

New York -  The Coast Guard is responding to a container vessel that ran aground in the Kill Van Kull, the body of water that separates Staten Island from Bayonne, N.J., at 4:30 a.m. today.

The 853-foot vessel,  New Delhi, was inbound to the container terminal at Port Elizabeth, N.J., when it ran aground.

It was re-floated at 6:15 a.m. and is safely moored at the Elizabeth terminal where it is being evaluated.

The Coast Guard implemented a safety zone, closing the area to traffic, after watch officers at the Coast Guard's Vessel Traffic Service watched the incident take place on one of the cameras used to monitor the harbor.

Coast Guard crews are on scene to monitor the situation and enforce the safety zone.

The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
