Coast Guard delivers blood to cruise ship passenger

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - A Coast Guard helicopter crew transported blood to a cruise ship passenger 105 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., Saturday.

The cruise ship Explorer of the Sea contacted the Coast Guard at 4:30 a.m. requesting the medevac of an 87-year-old man suffering from heart failure, pneumonia, and anemia.

A Coast Guard flight surgeon determined that the a helicopter hoist would be dangerous due to the patient's condition and he needed blood to stabilize him.

The helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City transported two units of blood from Naval Medical Center Portsmouth to the cruise ship.
