Coast Guard responds to sunken tug boat

NEW ORLEANS -The Coast Guard is working with state and local officials to investigate and clean up a light oil sheen that discharged from the tug boat, Miss Janice, that sank on the Mississippi River Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008.

At approximately 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report that the tug boat had capsized and sank in the Mississippi River.  All four crewmembers were rescued by another tow vessel that was in the area.

The Coast Guard along with the Orleans and Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Centers and NOAA are monitoring any discharge from the sunken vessel and any impact it may have on the river.

The Coast Guard is overseeing the salvage of the tug boat by its owner, Western Rivers Boat Management, and also WRBM has hired Oil Mop Inc., an oil spill response company, to conduct the cleanup.
